The History of the Jeep: From WWII Willys to the Modern Wrangler

WWII Willys Jeep history

Few vehicles carry as much history as the Jeep. What began as a rugged military workhorse has become an icon of freedom, adventure, and self-expression. Here's the short version of how the Jeep became the Jeep — and why owners have been personalizing them ever since.

Born for War: The Willys MB (1941)

As World War II loomed, the U.S. Army needed a light, fast, go-anywhere reconnaissance vehicle. Willys-Overland answered with the Willys MB in 1941 (alongside the Ford GPW built to the same spec). More than 600,000 were produced during the war. Tough, simple, and endlessly repairable, the little 4x4 earned a reputation that outlasted the conflict — and the name "Jeep" stuck.

Peacetime Pioneer: The CJ Series

After the war, Willys saw a future for the Jeep beyond the battlefield. The "Civilian Jeep" (CJ) series brought 4x4 capability to farmers, ranchers, and weekend explorers. Over the following decades the CJ evolved through many generations, cementing the Jeep as the original off-road vehicle and laying the groundwork for the model we know today.

The Modern Era: Wrangler & Gladiator

In 1986 the Wrangler (YJ) officially replaced the CJ, and the lineage has continued through the TJ, JK, and today's JL — each more refined, but all keeping the round headlights, seven-slot grille, and removable-top spirit intact. In 2020 the Gladiator (JT) revived the Jeep pickup, blending Wrangler attitude with truck utility.

The Seven-Slot Grille & Hidden Easter Eggs

Two things every Jeep fan loves: the famous seven-slot grille and the Easter eggs designers hide throughout each model. Curious about the stories behind them? Read Why Do Jeeps Have 7 Slots in the Grille? and explore the Hidden Jeep Easter Eggs tucked into modern Jeeps.
